Milano Unica has obtained the ISO 20121 Certification for sustainable event management

A structured and systematic effort

Milano Unica, the Italian trade show for high-end textiles and accessories, has obtained the ISO 20121 Certification, the international standard for sustainable event management. The certification was released after completion of the audit performed during the last edition of the trade show by the Accredia-accredited certifying body Bureau Veritas. It confirms Milano Unica’s commitment to pursuing environmental, economic, and social sustainability while consolidating its role as a reference point for the textile industry.

The ISO 20121 certification ensures that trade show planning and execution follow the principles of responsibility and sustainability to reduce negative impact while maximizing stakeholder benefits. The certification will be valid for three years, with annual maintenance audits.

A structured and systematic effort

The decision to undertake the certification process derives from the determination of Milano Unica’s Executive Board, which is composed of textile entrepreneurs sensitive to sustainability issues ever since. The certification is not just a recognition, but an opportunity to reinforce already validated practices and develop a three-year improvement program to make sustainability actions increasingly concrete and measurable.

A key aspect of this process is the stricter collaboration with partners and suppliers, who equally value sustainability as a key pillar. These include Fiera Milano, which is already ISO 20121 certified and helps to ensure consistency and continuity in the sustainable approach adopted.

Concrete actions for a more sustainable event

Below is a list of some of the sustainability initiatives already implemented by Milano Unica:

  • the MU Tendenze Sostenibilità Area that highlights exhibitors’ environmental and social sustainability performance;
  • use of materials with a lower environmental impact;
  • reuse of preset booths and props accessories;
  • digitization of badges and information materials to reduce paper consumption;
  • accessibility to ensure inclusion for all participants;
  • segregated waste collection to improve waste management;
  • public transportation promotion to reduce the trade show’s carbon footprint;
  • sustainable supply chain to promote a responsible approach along the entire value chain.

The obtained ISO 20121 Certification represents a significant milestone and at the same time a starting point for continuous improvement. In this way, Milano Unica has confirmed once again its commitment to promoting values of sustainability and innovation, contributing to the responsible transformation of the textile industry.
